The 15 best honeymoon destinations, one by one
1. Maldives: a sanctuary of seclusion
The Maldives is a chain of sandbanks and coral islands, with white beaches, warm water and some of the best reef life anywhere. Snorkel the house reef straight off your villa, spend an afternoon on a sandbank in the open lagoon, and take a sunset dolphin cruise along the atoll edge, about an hour and a half.
Stay at Gili Lankanfushi in North Malé Atoll, 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, where every villa stands over the water on its own. Overwater villas in the Maldives start around €350 a night in low season and run to €800 and more. Budget for what comes on top: a 10% service charge, 17% tourism tax and a green tax of about €10.50 per person per night. For a dinner you won't forget, book Ithaa at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in South Ari Atoll: 14 seats, 5 m under the sea, and a seasonal tasting menu with Maldivian lobster. Lunch is about €270 per person with tax and service, dinner about €440.
June to August is the south-west monsoon. Rain comes in short bursts rather than all day and the sea is rougher, but it's the cheapest time of year, with August the cheapest resort month. It's also manta season in Baa Atoll, where Hanifaru Bay is at its best from July to October. For the calmest, driest weather, go from January to April.
2. Santorini, Greece: sunsets on the caldera
Santorini is known for its caldera views, its sunsets and the ancient city of Akrotiri. Walk the caldera edge to Oia, and swim in the hot springs off Palea Kameni.
Canaves Oia Suites & Spa has suites with private plunge pools. For dinner, Ambrosia Restaurant serves lamb shank baked in parchment for about €90 per person, with the caldera below. Add a private sailing trip and a tasting of the island's volcanic wines.

3. Florence (Tuscany), Italy: Renaissance romance
Florence is the Renaissance you can walk through: the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio, all within a short stroll of each other.
Hotel Brunelleschi, in the heart of the city, pairs a historic building with modern comfort. For dinner, La Giostra is candlelit and cosy, with pear ravioli with pecorino and asparagus at about €63 per person. Book a private Uffizi tour, share a gelato on the Ponte Vecchio at sunset, and make time for Montepulciano and San Gimignano in the hills.

4. Maui, Hawaii: a natural playground
Maui is for couples who like the outdoors. Drive the Road to Hana, about 100 km of rainforest and waterfalls that takes a full day with stops, or stay a night in Hāna and split it over two. Watch the sunrise from Haleakalā, the island's highest peak at 3,055 m: sunrise needs a reservation on recreation.gov, released 60 days ahead, and bring warm layers, because the summit can drop below freezing.
Andaz Maui sits on Mokapu Beach in Wailea, on the dry, sheltered south coast. For dinner, Mama's Fish House is right on Kūʻau Cove near Pāʻia. Mains run €54 to €87 ($62 to $100), and the dessert to order is the Polynesian Black Pearl, a chocolate mousse in a seashell tuile, at €22 ($25). With a drink, budget €100 to €130 per person, and book as far ahead as you can. Keep one day for a couples' massage and the beach.
June to August is Maui's dry season: June is the driest month on the island, and highs run 31 to 32°C. It's also the busiest and dearest time. Summer swells bring a heavy shore break to south-coast beaches like Big Beach in Mākena, so swim where the lifeguards are. Lahaina is still rebuilding after the 2023 wildfire, so stay in Wailea, Kāʻanapali or Kapalua.
5. Paris, France: the classic
A little cliché, yes, but Paris earns its place. Walk the Seine by night, spend a morning in the Louvre, an afternoon in the Luxembourg Gardens, and see the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Hôtel Plaza Athénée has Eiffel Tower views from its rooms. For dinner, Septime is contemporary French cooking with a focus on sustainability, at about €100 per person; the roasted pigeon with seasonal garnishes is the dish people talk about. End the day on a sunset cruise on the Seine.

6. Kyoto, Japan: serenity and tradition
Kyoto has more than a thousand temples, the bamboo groves of Arashiyama and the old geisha district of Gion. Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, and Nijo Castle are the two classics.
Hoshinoya Kyoto is a luxury ryokan you reach by boat. For a special dinner, Kitcho Arashiyama serves a seasonal kaiseki menu at about €363 per person, with views over a Japanese garden. Book a private tea ceremony, then walk the bamboo grove hand in hand.

7. Bali, Indonesia: the island of the gods
Bali is rice terraces, volcanoes and a deep arts culture. Visit the sea temple of Tanah Lot, spend a few days in Ubud, and watch the sunset from Uluwatu Temple.
The Kayon Jungle Resort by Pramana has private pool villas in the forest outside Ubud. For dinner, Swept Away at The Samaya Ubud sits by the Ayung River; order bebek betutu, the Balinese smoked duck, at about €45 per person. Hike Mount Batur for the sunrise, then book a Balinese couples' massage.

8. Amalfi Coast, Italy: coastal elegance
The Amalfi Coast is cliffside villages over the Tyrrhenian Sea: Positano, Amalfi and, 350 m above the water, Ravello with its two garden villas. Drive the coast road, visit the ruins of Pompeii, and take a boat into the Emerald Grotto.
Le Sirenuse in Positano is the classic honeymoon stay. Its restaurant La Sponda is lit by 400 candles every evening; the spaghetti with courgette and parmesan comes to about €108 per person. If Positano is over budget, Praiano, between Positano and Amalfi, is noticeably cheaper than both. Rent a scooter for the coast roads, or hire a boat for the coves.

9. Bora Bora, French Polynesia: overwater bliss
Bora Bora is a small volcanic island, crowned by the 727 m peak of Mount Otemanu, inside a turquoise lagoon ringed by low sandy islets. Snorkel with rays and blacktip reef sharks on a lagoon tour (€90 to €160 per person), take a half-day 4x4 tour up to the viewpoints and the wartime gun sites (about €78 to €92), or simply do nothing on the beach at Matira Point.
The St. Regis Bora Bora sits on its own islet, with overwater villas that each have a private pool or whirlpool. Overwater bungalows on Bora Bora start around €350 a night and pass €1,650 at the top resorts. For dinner, La Villa Mahana in Vaitape has eight tables and one seating a night: French cooking with Polynesian ingredients, in set menus of about €130 to €165 per person before wine. Book it months ahead. Keep one day for a Polynesian massage with monoi oil at the spa.
June to August is Bora Bora's dry season and its best time of year, with highs of 29 to 30°C and a third or less of December's rain. July and August are also the busiest and dearest weeks, with French school holidays and the Heiva festival, and in 2027 the Pacific Games in Tahiti (24 July to 7 August) add to the crowds. Getting there is a 50-minute flight from Tahiti, then a free boat to Vaitape.
10. Cape Town, South Africa: a city of experiences
Cape Town sits under Table Mountain, with Robben Island, the penguins at Boulders Beach and the Cape of Good Hope all within reach.
The Silo Hotel rises above the V&A Waterfront with views in every direction. For dinner, The Test Kitchen in Woodstock is known for inventive dishes like smoked scallops with pork belly, at about €81 per person. Ride the Table Mountain cable car at sunset and spend a day in the Cape Winelands.

11. Banff, Canada: Rocky Mountain majesty
Banff is the Canadian Rockies at their most famous: wildlife, the turquoise water of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, and the Banff Upper Hot Springs to finish the day.
Fairmont Banff Springs, the "Castle in the Rockies", is the historic stay. For dinner, The Eden at The Rimrock Resort Hotel serves French cooking with a local twist and big mountain views; the Alberta beef tenderloin with wild mushrooms is about €90 per person. Take the gondola up, then soak in the hot springs.
Summer is the Rockies' best season, with everything open. The Moraine Lake shuttle starts on 1 June, and July and August are peak everything, including prices. Wildfire smoke is a real risk in high summer, so keep a flexible day. Calgary is the gateway, 1.5 to 2 hours away.
12. Ljubljana, Slovenia: a small city built for two
Ljubljana is one of Europe's most underrated honeymoon cities: a green river, Baroque facades and a castle on its hill right above the old town. Cross the Dragon Bridge, wander the old town, and ride the funicular up to the castle (€6 return) for the view.
Vander Urbani Resort is a design hotel in the centre. For dinner, Strelec Restaurant sits in the archer's tower of Ljubljana Castle; the Slovenian deer with juniper berries, beetroot and cottage cheese is about €70 per person. Take a boat along the Ljubljanica, stroll through Tivoli Park, and add Lake Bled and Piran for a longer trip.

13. Seychelles: beaches and granite
The Seychelles are white beaches, granite boulders and wildlife you won't find elsewhere. On Praslin, walk the Vallée de Mai, the UNESCO palm forest where the coco de mer grows wild, with loop trails of 1 to 4 km. Entry is €27.60 (SCR 450). Hop between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue by ferry, snorkel, and find a beach to yourselves.
Raffles Seychelles, at Anse Takamaka on Praslin, has 87 villas on the hillside, each with its own plunge pool. For a long lunch, Chez Batista at Anse Takamaka in the south of Mahé is a beach restaurant with sand underfoot, known for fish grilled in front of you and a Sunday Creole buffet with live music. Order grilled red snapper with Creole sauce, or octopus curry (kari zourit), and expect VAT and a service charge on top of the menu price.
June to August is the south-east trade-wind season: the driest and coolest months, with July the driest of the year. It's also windy, and the south and east coasts get rough water and seaweed. Base yourselves on a calm north- or west-facing beach, like Beau Vallon on Mahé or Côte d'Or on Praslin. The calmest sea of the year comes in April, May, October and November.
14. Queenstown, New Zealand: adventure for two
Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu under the Southern Alps, and it's the adventure capital of New Zealand: bungee jumping, skydiving, or a gentler hot-air balloon at sunrise over the Remarkables.
Matakauri Lodge is the quiet, luxurious base. For dinner, Rata serves modern New Zealand cooking in a relaxed room; the South Island venison loin with beetroot and blackcurrant is about €54 per person.

15. Colmar, France: a storybook town
Colmar is cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and canals, right on the Alsace wine route. See the Isenheim Altarpiece at the Unterlinden Museum (€14, closed on Tuesdays), walk through Little Venice, and taste at the wine villages of Eguisheim, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg, all within 15 km.
Hôtel Le Maréchal is a 4-star hotel in a listed house from 1565, on the water in Little Venice. For dinner, La Maison des Têtes gives you two choices: the Brasserie Historique, where the half-cooked duck foie gras with apricot and toasted brioche is €31, or the Michelin-starred Restaurant Girardin, with tasting menus at €135 and €155. Take the 25-minute boat through the canals (€9, from the Saint-Pierre bridge), then find a winstub for a glass of Riesling.
June is Colmar's best summer month, with afternoons around 25°C and long light before the peak. July and August are hotter, around 27°C, and full, and many old hotels have no air conditioning. The upside of August is the Foire aux Vins d'Alsace, the region's big wine fair (31 July to 9 August in 2026). Colmar is about 30 minutes from Strasbourg by train.
Where summer is the wrong season
Three places on this list are at their best outside June to August, and it's worth knowing before you book the dates:
- Kyoto: June is the rainy season and July and August are humid. Go from late March to April, or mid to late November.
- Cape Town: June to August is its winter, wet and cool. Go between October and April.
- Queenstown: summer here is ski season. Perfect for a snow honeymoon, not for hiking.
And two are only half-summer picks. Santorini and Florence are both at their best in June, and both get hot, crowded and expensive in July and August.
How to plan a summer honeymoon
A summer honeymoon mostly comes down to two things: picking June where you can, and booking early.
- June beats August almost everywhere on this list. Santorini, Florence, Paris and the Amalfi Coast are all better in June; in August Italy slows down around Ferragosto on 15 August, and Paris half-empties.
- Book the famous coasts first. Travellers who plan the Amalfi Coast with Stippl book it about 125 days ahead on average, the longest lead of anywhere in Italy.
- Pair a city with a coast. Florence plus the Amalfi Coast, or Ljubljana plus Lake Bled and Piran, gives you culture and slow beach days in one trip.
